Regulator offers new opt-out for PG&E SmartMeters (Biz Journal)
The California Public Utilities Commission has proposed a new way for
customers of Pacific Gas & Electric Co. to opt out of the utility's SmartMeter
program, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Installation of the meters has
drawn controversy by people concerned over health effects and the accuracy of
the devices. But the CPUC's proposal would, like a similar plan from PG&E,
impose fees on customers who request a non-transmitting meter. They would be
charged $90 up front and a $15 monthly fee.
